LOBBY  by Suzanne Schols ︎︎︎

Seeking to contribute to the visibility
and transparency of the lobbying world.

Story

LOBBY by Suzanne Schols is a visual investigation into the Brussels lobbying world. In the political capital of Europe, thousands of lobbyists roam daily, attempting to influence European Union policy. In an attempt to enhance the visibility and transparency of the world of lobbying,  Suzanne asked 122 interest groups for permission to take a photograph of the lobbies of their Brussels-based offices.

As a former lobbyist, Suzanne Schols sought access to lobby organizations representing multiple interests. To do so, she had to lobby herself. Through sometimes hard-negotiated photos, LOBBY seeks to contribute to the visibility and transparency of the lobbying world, which often appears closed off to the outside world.

Approach

LOBBY features an extensive palette of photography, texts and publicly available data about the lobbyfirms that Suzanne investigated. The book invites the viewer to navigate a labyrinth of lobbies ranging from multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), industry associations, and trade unions.

The design for the book had to strike a delicate balance; it had to do justice to the complex nature of Suzanne her research, while also be visually appealing and different in tone. The design deliberately unveils some of the mystery that typically surrounds lobbyists and reveals an average office world. With various interventions the viewer's attention is maintained, such as use of colour, lay-out and physical size.
